Thank you. Being on the radio, I'm used to speaking with a headset on and never actually seeing my audience, so bear with me. I'd first like to thank Kerry for thinking of me when planning for this event began this summer. Id also like to thank Tineka and everyone involved at the Writers House, as well as those in the English Department and Alumni Association who made this day possible.
When I was contacted about this event in late August, it grabbed my attention immediately, first as a golfer and sports fan, but also as a writer. I remember reading some articles on espn.com after the PGA Championship this summer, and seeing Ron's name at the bottom. I had seen his resume, but that's when it really hit me that we'd be lucky enough to be hearing from someone who has covered names like Vijay Singh, Greg Norman, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods . . . Names that will go down in history as some of the greatest to have ever played the game. And as exciting as that is, I think what is most inspiring is that while Ron has walked on hallowed grounds such as Augusta and St. Andrews, he has also walked on places far more familiar to us, like Hartman Green, and sat through classes in Keiper, just like each of us.
As Ron said, "F&M was truly the place that took me out of a life in the steel mills into a life as a writer." It's an honor and a privilege to have him, and it's my pleasure to introduce Mr. Ron Sirak.
