Teaching and Learning

A Catalyst for Curricular Innovation

The museum partners with academic departments to offer exhibition and collections based courses such as the curatorial seminar and “Museum Mysteries.”  Additionally, thanks to a grant from the Mellon Foundation, the museum has hosted visiting scholars and artists who offer courses that draw on the museum’s collections and resources.

A Center for Student and Faculty Research

The museum collection has become a robust site of course-based and independent student research in a range of disciplines, including Art History, Africana Studies, American Studies, History, Classics, Anthropology, Women’s Studies.  Students use the exhibition venues to showcase their research. Faculty use the museum’s galleries to disseminate their own work to the campus and community.

A Learning Community

The Phillips Museum is a bridge to informal learning that spans both the campus and the wider community by offering exhibitions that explore and illuminate our common experience through images and objects.
