Discovering the Right Opportunity

Fellowships are typically competitive, merit-based opportunities for which you must apply. At F&M, we firmly believe that every student should have the opportunity to apply for at least one fellowship. We’ll begin by discussing your interests and goals to help you select the fellowship programs that best align with your envisioned future. We’ll then guide you through the application process, helping you refine your application materials, select the more appropriate sources for recommendation letters, practice your interview, and more to ensure you put forward the best application possible.

Opportunities are open to undergraduates and alumni and can range from short-term summer courses to multi-year graduate programs, and self-directed projects to cohort-driven service opportunities throughout the world. Experiences are often funded. They can take the form of:

Lisbeth Marquez-Delgado '21, a government and Spanish major, was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) fellowship in Mexico. “The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant fellowship is the culmination of my academic, work and volunteer experience, which focuses on my cultural heritage,” Marquez-Delgado said. “Fulbright has been a transformational experience for me because I get to collaborate with youth while also empowering myself to be proud of my dual identity.”

Every Stitch Tells a Story

It's not every day you wear hoops skirts, bustles and bonnets to work — let alone hand-stitch them. But for Franklin & Marshall College alum Rachel Sheffield, it's just another day on the job. An American studies major and Italian minor, Sheffield's sewing talents helped her land a Marshall Fellows grant. The scholarship enabled Sheffield to investigate her hometown's history at Northwestern State University's Cammie G. Henry Research Center and create traditional Southern gowns.

Record 11 Alumni Selected for 2023 Fulbright Awards

Eleven recent graduates of F&M were awarded Fulbright fellowships in 2023, the highest number in F&M history. Among this year's Fulbright recipients is 2022 graduate Siliphone "Anna" Phommachanthone who will travel to her home country of Laos this fall to study developmental progress that directly results from demining efforts.

The Fulbright Program

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. The program funds American citizens to study, conduct research, or teach English abroad, and is among the largest and most diverse exchange programs in the world.

At F&M, we are proud to be recognized by Fulbright as a top-producing institution. This recognition is given to U.S. colleges and universities that received the highest number of applicants selected for a Fulbright program in a particular year. F&M has received this honor nine times in the past decade: 2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24.
