J. Samuel Houser (Sam) is Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at Franklin & Marshall College. Sam graduated from Franklin & Marshall in 1989 with a degree in Latin and earned his Ph.D. in Classical Philology from Brown University in 1997. He returned to Franklin & Marshall in 1996 to teach Greek and Latin in the Department of Classics, where he remains a senior adjunct.
In addition to his appointment in Classics, Sam served as Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations during a time of significant fundraising for capital improvements, including the Barshinger Life Sciences and Philosophy Building and development of the College Houses. He joined the President’s staff in 2007 and served as Secretary of the College between 2007 and 2014. Sam has coordinated the College’s Strategic Positioning Initiative and chaired the Strategic Planning Steering Committee for President Porterfield, and is responsible for key Franklin & Marshall strategic initiatives and community and government relations. He chairs the Board of the Millport Conservancy and is a Trustee of Wilson College, where he serves on the Executive Committee. He also volunteers for the Brown Alumni Schools Committee as a regional interviewer for prospective students.
Prior to returning to Franklin & Marshall, Sam taught classical languages and literature at the Lincoln School in Providence, at the University of Rhode Island, and at Brown University.
