The Program

The Ware Institute in partnership with CARE (Central American Relief Efforts) is pleased to provide this Spring Alternative Break opportunity. This is a health-related alternative break for students interested in medicine, public health, and service to others. Spanish not required.  CARE is a faith-based organization in Lancaster, PA which does not proselytize. It's mission is to mobilize volunteers and humanitarian aid in the United States to benefit populations in abject poverty in areas of Central America. Students are encouraged to visit CARE’s web site which provides valuable travel information and tips for this trip.

Students are asked (but not required) to collect vitamins and/or ibuprofen for distribution at health clinics. It is recommended that students request donations for these items.

Program Leaders

Steve Mentzer, CARE’s founder and President, oversees this program and his son, Marc Mentzer is program leader and interpreter in Honduras. Edwin Marel Carbajal Hernandez is CARE’s project coordinator in Honduras.

Inoculations & Medications

You are required to complete a travel clinic by January 27 or sooner to determine inoculations, medications, or other vaccines that are required or that you might need. You should check the CDC website for a country-specific list of required inoculations, vaccines or medications.

There are three options for your travel clinic:

  • Your family physician
  • Appel Health Travel Clinic
  • A local travel clinic

Depending upon your individual health issues, many medications need to be started weeks in advance of your departure.
The deadline to complete your travel clinic is January 31, 2011.

Travel & Logistics

Students are required to provide a copy of their passport that is valid through August, 2012, with your completed application. Students must know visa their requirements. More information about passports and visas can be found at the U.S. State Department web site.

Students are required to arrive at the airport no less than two hours prior to departure. Students who need transportation from F&M to and from point of departure can request transportation for a fee. Students can also elect to make their own pre- and post-travel arrangements for travel to and from the point of departure at their own expense. Contact the Ware Institute 717-291-4164 for more information.
