What is V.I.T.A.?

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is an IRS program designed to help low and moderate-income taxpayers complete their annual tax returns at no cost and take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit. Every year, beginning in December and continuing until mid-January, certified student volunteers receive training from the IRS to help prepare basic tax returns.

The F&M VITA site partners with United Way of Lancaster County which coordinates with other VITA sites throughout the County with the help of the Lancaster County Money In Your Pocket Coalition. The F&M VITA site has been operating since 2009.

Become an F&M Student V.I.T.A. Volunteer

SEPTEMBER 3-14: (VITA) application period. There are two types of volunteer needs at F&M's VITA site

  • students who receive IRS training to become certified tax preparers
  • untrained volunteers to serve as greeters, translators, and assist with site set up and tear down.

To learn more about how you can become a student VITA tax preparer, please contact: '15, the Ware intern coordinating the student VITA training program for 2013.  Please contact Elana if you are interested in training to becoming an F&M student VITA assistant during tax season. VITA is supported by United Way of Lancaster Co.

How can I get my taxes done for free?
  • Dial 211 on your cell phone or call United Way LINC at  717-291-4562.

Beginning in mid-January, local taxpayers can get appointments through United Way.  They provide free information and explain what paperwork and forms you need in order to make an appointment to have your taxes done at one of the Lancaster Co. VITA sites.

The F&M VITA site is part of the Lancaster County Money In Your Pocket Coalition. To learn more, visit the coalition's Facebook page, which promotes and administers the Lancaster County VITA program.

  • "After reading the The Diplomat article, I just wanted to commend all of you for what you are doing.  There are so many people that are struggling in this economy and you are providing a much needed service during an uncertain time. You all deserve a pat on the back and a big hug for offering your time and talents.  We are lucky to have you here with us at F&M."
