The spring 2011 semester is under way at the Writing Center. While we wait for spring to really arrive, here's a new edition of Active Voice!
In this issue,
- sophomore tutor Amy Blakemore reflects on the challenges international students encounter in learning to write by U.S. academic standards, as well as the challenges F&M students face when they study abroad. Read her essay, "Talking About Writing: An Approach to Cross-Cultural Differences."
- senior Katie Cooper imagines some cross-cultural differences of an entirely different sort in her short fictional piece "Kerouac's Visit to the Writing Center."
- we introduce more of our Writing Center staff. Look for profiles of Chad Wright, Judith Stapleton, Caitlin Black, Kevin Brown, and Alex Hartline, joining those of Aly Massof and Amy Blakemore
- senior Perry Oddo invites a little word play with his game "Minced Words."
- senior Sara Lupolt talks about writing with Professor Dorothy Merritts of the Department of Earth and Environment. Read "A Professor's Perspective: An Interview with Dr. Merritts."
- And, just in case you missed it in December, we reprint junior Katie Delaney's feature on former Writing Center tutor Libby Gaines Brill '07.
