PIT Work Group Descriptions
Throughout the week, students will learn about community service, Lancaster city and county, leadership, and themselves. Below is a brief description of the four different workshops in which first-year students can participate:
LET'S GET READY FOR SCHOOL (OPIT) Franklin & Marshall students are paired, one-on-one, with first-graders at local elementary schools. Throughout the week, the students learn about each other and "get ready for school." This program is designed to boost self-esteem and confidence for both sets of students before their first day of school.
FRIENDS FOR LIFE (FFL) Friends for Life matches students with the elderly in an adult day care program. Participants develop activities to play and work with elderly people and assist with the exercises, crafts and other activities within the adult day care.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY (H4H) Habitat for Humanity is a national organization that builds and renovates houses. Working alongside the Lancaster branch of this organization, students help renovate a home and learn other essential skills in restoring a house. In addition, students are in contact with city planners and other key players in helping revitalize the Lancaster community.
CLEAN AIR, CLEAN WATER This workshop focuses on various aspects of environmental action such as recycling and pollution, as well as environmental issues in Lancaster County, including the politics of land and stream use. Students work in local and county parks to help build trails, clean streams, and other such activities that help to reduce the effects of pollution and to make parks and other areas more accessible to the public. Participants will work at F&M's Millport Conservancy.
