Introduction
A transformation of the U.S. social and economic structures has taken places in the past 30 years. Fewer than one family in five is headed by a single male breadwinner today, and the majority of women, including that with preschoolers, are now employed. But only a small percentage of these women choose careers in sciences. Many bright and talented undergraduate women say they don't wish to choose between family and career. During grades K-12, girls tend to participate less in science, and few choose science as an undergraduate major. OF those women who do, fewer still become tenured professors in Geoscience departments.
