Nominations and Applications

The Franklin & Marshall College Clemente Course in the Humanities is seeking nominees for the upcoming academic year. If you are a member of a social service agency and know of anyone who might qualify for the course, we would appreciate you taking the time to fill out this form at a later date.

The Clemente Course began in 1995 in New York City as an innovative response to the need to expand access to liberal education for educationally and economically disadvantaged people: in the words of its founder, Earl Shorris, it brings the humanities to the poor. Hundreds of Clemente Courses have been offered in the US and Latin America since then. The F&M course has been in existence since 2005. Art history, U.S. history, literature, moral philosophy and writing/critical thinking are the traditional disciplines represented in this eight-month course.

The opportunity to share the benefits of a liberal arts education with a new constituency in Lancaster is especially exciting to the Franklin & Marshall community and we are committed to offering an alternative, and more empowering, educational experience to the many training or career-specific courses available in the city. F&M offers transferable college credit for students who graduate with a B or better from the Clemente Course. Classes begin their work in September, and conclude in May.

Requirements for Applicants

1. An income of less than 150% of poverty level;

2. An application detailing your interest in the program;

3. Successful completion of a two-week writing/reading workshop.

The course will be free of charge and all books and supplies will be provided. We also offer free childcare for the children of the Clemente students. Classes typically meet twice a week from 6-8 p.m.
