Inaugural Symposium for Emerging Scholars
March 5-7, 2009
Visiting Fellows - Call for Nominations
The Center for Liberal Arts and Society at Franklin & Marshall College invites nominations of promising junior scholars whose research embodies the ideals of liberal arts scholarship and the values of liberal learning, including inter- and trans-disciplinary practice, critical thinking, and broad relevance to fundamental human questions. Three fellowships of $1000 will be awarded to junior scholars whose research relates to the symposium theme of "Resonance."
Resonance is a term that has emerged as central to new interpretive models of science, humanities and the social sciences. Resonance is:
...the prolongation of a sound by reflection or the sympathetic vibration of other bodies
...a vibration of large amplitude produced by a relatively small vibration as it moves from its point of origin.
The symposium aims to engage the concept of resonance as it applies to texts, ideas, events, and objects that are transformed, enhanced, and enlarged as they travel and reverberate through space, matter, and time. We invite scholarship in any discipline that explores or exemplifies the concept of resonance literally, figuratively, or metaphorically.
