Winner of a 2009 Silver Cuppie Award

LANCASTER, Pa. – Liberales, the semi-annual newsletter of Franklin & Marshall College's Center for Liberal

Arts and Society, has been honored by CUPRAP: The Association of Communicators in Education.  

The newsletter's Spring 2008 debut issue earned a "Silver Cuppie" in the Print-Newsletters category.

CUPRAP's annual awards recognize creativity, marketing execution and impact of message. Judges are experts in the field of communications in education and

include designers, writers, editors, educators, media professionals and radio and TV executives.

Liberales is edited by Marcy Dubroff, associate director of the Center for Liberal Arts & Society, and designed by Lancaster-based John Svatek of Kerning Pair Design.

"We are thrilled to be recognized by CUPRAP," said Dubroff.  "Liberales has been a labor of love for us from the very beginning and we are gratified that our efforts have been noticed."

Liberales, so named because it refers to the classical term for liberal arts, features interviews with noted speakers such as Jonathan Miller, Susan Jacoby and Seth Shulman, as well as original photography and stories from CLAS-sponsored events on the Franklin & Marshall campus.

CLAS programs endeavor to provide opportunities for faculty, students and professional staff, as well as the general public, to explore the connections between our academic studies in the liberal arts and sciences and the cultural and social questions that confront us all, according to Dubroff.

"Our goal is to make Liberales a showcase of the intellectual opportunities CLAS provides for faculty, students and the citizens of Lancaster," said Dubroff.  "We hope our readers will use it to learn, analyze, and reflect on the complex and challenging issues that face us all."
