Financial Aid

Eligibility

During the academic year, students will continue to be eligible for financial aid during a term of off-campus study.   This includes federal and state loans and Franklin & Marshall merit scholarships and need-based grants.  In general, eligibility for financial aid is based on Franklin & Marshall tuition, cost of housing and meals from the off-campus study program, and an allowance for books and personal expenses.  Your annual estimated family contribution as generated by your FAFSA will remain the same regardless of program costs.

The College will not award Tuition Exchange or Grant-in-Aid benefits for off-campus study.

Required Paperwork

Students who receive financial aid at Franklin & Marshall will be required to complete the Off-Campus Study Expense Planner and return it to the Office of Financial Aid by the date indicated on that office's Off-Campus Study Policies and Procedures (both documents can be accessed at http://www.fandm.edu/x2593).  If you receive only merit-based scholarships and you will be charged full Franklin & Marshall tuition for the program, you do not need to submit any documentation regarding costs.

When completing your expense planner, include charges or estimates for 21 meals per week.  If your program provides less than 21 meals per week, provide an estimate for the cost of the remaining meals.  This information is usually provided on program websites.  If you have trouble finding figures for your program, contact the Office of International Programs.

Once you have returned your planner to the Office of Financial Aid, you will receive a Contractual or Consortial Agreement by email.  Complete the student portion and return the document.  The agreement will then be forwarded to your program on your behalf.  Cost of attendance and aid will be reviewed once the agreement has been returned.

How Your Aid is Calculated

Your need-based financial aid award will be adjusted according to the difference between the cost of housing and meals at F&M and that of the program.  If you have a federal work-study award, it may be converted into an additional loan award.

Merit-based scholarships will be awarded in full unless the cost of attendance for the program is significantly less than the cost of attendance at Franklin & Marshall.  In that case, the scholarship amount may be prorated.

International Students

International students are eligible for only one semester of financial aid for off-campus study and no financial aid will be granted for study in the student's home country.
An international student receiving Franklin & Marshall financial aid who does not return to campus in the semester immediately following a semester or year-long off-campus study experience is required to reimburse the College for the institutional aid received during the off-campus study period.
