2009 Nevonian Medal Recipient

Andrew M. Rouse '49

For over six decades, Andrew M. Rouse ‘49 has given his time faithfully to Franklin & Marshall. Andy has served the College as a class agent, reunion committee volunteer, president of several regional alumni clubs, and as a member of the Alumni Board, the College's Board of Trustees and the Board of Visitors.

Andy earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Franklin & Marshall in 1949 and his Bachelor of Laws from Columbia University in 1952. That same year, he enlisted in the Air Force where he rose to the rank of Captain. In 1957, he returned to his studies and earned an M.B.A. from Harvard University where he graduated with distinction. While in Boston, Andy answered the call to become president of F&M's Boston Alumni Club. After moving to Washington D.C., he assumed leadership of that alumni club. An analytical person and skilled manager, he is often the first to see a problem and offer a creative solution. Andy's career as a successful businessman included high-level work in the government sector, extensive assignments in strategic planning and management in the insurance industry, and service on many corporate boards. In 1986, he retired as an executive vice president from the Cigna Corporation in Philadelphia.

Driven by a strong belief that Franklin & Marshall alumni have an "ethical imperative" to support the College in every way possible, Andy has generously endowed numerous initiatives, including the Alumni Endowment Fund which continues to provide financial support for the Alumni Association. The Rouse Scholarship provides an academic scholarship for six upper-class students each year. He also endowed a lecture fund for the Business, Organizations & Society Department and led the charge to raise the funds for the Philadelphia Alumni Writers House.

Andy has successfully blended an outstanding career with a lifetime commitment to his alma mater. He continues to live a full life in every sense of the word. For example, at the age of 60, he took up crew and continues to row nearly six miles each day on the Schuylkill River. He shares this passion with students as a supporter of the F&M Crew program. One of the F&M women's boats was named in honor of Andy Rouse.

The Nevonian Medal is presented annually to a member of the Nevonian Society who has demonstrated extraordinary and sustained dedication to the College. Andy Rouse, in recognition of your more than six decades of service and generosity on behalf of this College, we are proud to bestow upon you the 2009 Franklin & Marshall College Nevonian Medal.
