Acceptance Rates

Franklin & Marshall has a long reputation for placing students into medical schools and is well recognized within the medical education community.  Typically, between 35-45 F&M students apply to medical and other health professions schools each year.  This include seniors and graduates who have chosen to delay applying for one or more years. Our records indicate that, in the past five years in a highly competitive medical school admissions climate, students who earn a 3.3 GPA (overall and math/science), who have a proven record of leadership and involvement outside of the classroom (especially in health care and/or community service), have an 85-90% probability of being admitted to medical school within one year following graduation.

Franklin & Marshall has been fortunate to have a significant number of students accepted in this ultra competitive application process. From 1999-2003, 139 seniors and alumni applied with a cumulative GPA of 3.3/4.0 or better, and 111 (79.9%) were accepted. Of these students with a BCPM (biology, chemistry, physics, and math) GPA above a 3.3, 82% were accepted. Coupled with a total MCAT score of 27 or better, this percentage jumps to 87.5%. Counting those students with a 3.3 or better cumulative GPA, 3.3 or better BCPM, and 30 or better MCAT score, the acceptance rate is over 90%. Students with higher GPAs and board scores have an even higher acceptance rate, and those students with the national average cumulative GPAs above 3.5 have had a 93% acceptance rate these past five years.

While the strongest applicants gain multiple acceptances, other students gain acceptance through post-graduate work or research, which leads to higher board scores and a more competitive application. Our relationships with the surrounding medical schools (Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York) remain strong, and these schools have come to expect good things from our students. We also have maintained early selection programs with both Penn State and George Washington, and have one or two students each year apply and are accepted to these programs.

In addition to Franklin & Marshall's long reputation for placing students into medical school, the College also has a good relationship with veterinary schools, typically those schools from which many of our students are drawn. Typically, we place 1-2 students into veterinary school per year. Currently, we have vet students at Cornell, Tufts, Ohio State University, North Carolina, and 3 or 4 at the University of Pennsylvania.

It is critical to gain exposure to veterinary medicine prior to applying to veterinary school. F&M offers many opportunities in our local community. These include local veterinarians who volunteer to host and/or potentially employ our pre-vet students, volunteer/paid work at a veterinary pet treatment service, volunteer/paid work at the Humane League, and participation in a spring foal-sitting program at the New Bolton Campus of the University of Pennsylvania. Our veterinary applicants are very experienced and passionate about pursuing a career in veterinary medicine.
