Forest Ecosystems

A course in basic and applied forest ecology, with particular emphasis on the organization and dynamics of forest communities, ecosystems, and landscapes. Topics include forest environments (macroclimates, microclimates, soils), tree physiology and growth, ecosystem productivity, biogeochemistry, disturbance regimes, regeneration processes, biodiversity, and the historical ecology of eastern North American forests. The laboratory includes field trips and a multi-week project plus a voluntary field trip to New England or the Southern Appalachians over fall break.
