In July 1787, Franklin College’s inaugural class of 114 students set the tone for an institution of higher learning that has grown from its humble origins into a renowned liberal arts college with an international reputation for excellence in educating a diverse collection of engaged students.

The merging of Franklin College with Marshall College in 1853 pushed Franklin & Marshall College to greater heights. In each decade of its existence, the College has fostered a spirit of independence and collaboration, of inspiration and innovation, and of intellect and character that reflects the spirit of its founding fathers Benjamin Franklin and John Marshall.

“Beyond 225: Inspired for Life” is the theme for a yearlong celebration that commemorates the College’s 225th anniversary. Throughout the 2012-13 academic year, the College will host events that highlight the many achievements of our alumni who have made their mark on the world and also the current and future students who will carry on the F&M tradition for years to come.
