Travels with Shakespeare: From F&M to the Arabian Peninsula
– 9:00 pm
Ware College House Great Room
Katherine Hennessey is the author of Shakespeare on the Arabian Peninsula (Palgrave 2018) and director of the short documentary Shakespeare in Yemen, which was screened in June 2018 at the Signature Theatre in New York City. She has recently been awarded a fellowship by the National Endowment for the Humanities in support of her next book project, Theatre on the Arabian Peninsula.
She will talk about her new book, which explores the ways in which theatre-makers, students, and scholars on the Arabian Peninsula use Shakespeare to address urgent regional issues, like authoritarianism, censorship, racial discrimination and gender inequality. The talk will be followed by a discussion about her career trajectory since F&M, which has taken her to France, Italy, the University of Notre Dame, the Palestinian West Bank, Yemen and the UK's Global Shakespeare program.
Sponsored by Alumni Relations, Arabic, Comparative Literature, English, the Humanities Initiative, International Studies, Italian and OSPGD.
Dessert Reception to follow. Free and open to the public.
