In the summer of 2023, Franklin & Marshall debuted a pilot lifelong learning initiative for alumni, parents and family and friends of the College. These four-week, non-credit courses explored a contemporary topic of interest and invited F&M community members to engage in thoughtful conversation.

  • Course Format: This course was held virtually.
This course introduced participants to the broad lines of the complex landscape of post-secondary education in the United States. Topics included a taxonomy of colleges and universities; the budget model of higher ed; elements of the student experience; rankings, recruiting, and reputation.
Body, Mind and Crime: Criminal Responsibility in the Age of Brain Science
  • Instructor: Joel P. Eigen, Ph.D., Emeritus Charles A. Dana Professor of Sociology

  • Course Format:  This course was held in person on the F&M campus in Lancaster, Pa.
Although we most likely think in terms of insanity when assessing the impact of mental derangement upon criminal behavior, the last two centuries have witnessed attempts to implicate the brain directly in acts of violent, aggressive behavior.  Participants explored the nature of criminal evidence; examined the use of expert testimony to explain the possible effect of brain injury and other cerebral anomalies on willful behavior; and considered the response of juries to such claims.

Success Beyond F&M: A Graduate’s Path to a Career in Animal Behavior
