ADVISORY: Reporters, producers and photographers: the COVID-19 era requires adjustments to protect the health and safety of everyone, and this includes journalists. Please contact Peter Durantine, director of media relations, at email@example.com or 717-602-4300, to request permission to visit the campus and interview members of the Franklin & Marshall College community. Due to the present circumstances, visitors are not permitted inside any campus building. While the media is considered essential to the community, and therefore an exception to this policy, journalists are required to first contact the media relations director to schedule your visit. If your visit is scheduled, you will be expected to wear a face mask, maintain appropriate physical distancing during your entire time on campus, and follow all relevant College protocols.
Located in the Office of Communications, the Director of Media Relations manages the College's external news outreach, develops strategies and produces marketing content for media coverage of the College. The Director of Media Relations oversees College interaction with print, online and broadcast media, and works with the Communications team to tell stories through a variety of platforms.
As College spokesperson, the Director of Media Relations manages inquiries from the media; cultivates relationships with international, national and regional media; produces and distributes news releases; manages special and high-profile events and initiatives; and provides strategic analysis, consultation, training and support to faculty, professional staff and students on engagement with the news media.
We encourage faculty and professional staff to suggest ideas for stories, some of which, depending on news value, we may share with the media. To suggest a story idea, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Few stories published on the homepage of Franklin & Marshall’s website (which also appear in The Diplomat each week classes are session) are news for the media.
We write news releases and advisories in journalistic style (The Associated Press Stylebook), which is used by the majority of news entities. In certain cases, we will encourage program leaders and student groups to draft news releases for their activities or public events. The Director of Media Relations will work with you to ensure these communications are effective.
All news releases from the College are distributed through the Office of Communications. For assistance, contact Greg Wright, Associate Vice President for Communications, at 717-358-4872.
The Office of Communications is the main point of contact for media inquiries.
The news media is welcome to shoot photos or videos on campus, but they must first contact the Director of Media Relations to assist with photography needs and connect with the appropriate students, faculty or administrators for interviews.
For filming and photography by professional photographers, permission is required from the Office of Communications
