Explore Through Local Service

 Looking for an opportunity to make a difference for a whole day or just a few hours with transportation and all of the details already included?  Sample one or more of the following volunteer opportunities until you find your niche.

Registration is required and sent by email approximately two weeks prior to the dates below and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Service Saturdays 

  • 18 Rock the Block
  • St Jude 5 K run, Harrisburg
  • Salvation Army Serve 3
  • Habitat For Humanity Trip

Volunteer to work alongside other F&M students while also learning about different needs, issues and interests that matter to the local community.  Service projects, off-campus destinations and time commitment will vary. 

Though most events are held on Saturdays, some may also be on Sundays or Friday evenings depending on the community partner.

  • Saturday, February 29: Habitat for Humanity Re-Store

GenConnect 

Make someone’s day by volunteering to spend a Friday afternoon visiting with residents at Brethren Village Retirement Community while playing games and/or working on craft projects.  Volunteer once or join us every month from 1:30 – 4:30 pm. Registration is required.

She created an art therapy curriculum via her work there through a program called F&M Works which allows students to serve at various community non-profit organizations throughout the semester. The F&M Works Program is part of the Ware Institute for Civic Engagement at F&M.

Green Days

Care about the environment and want to contribute to local efforts?  Join the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay's efforts to plant trees, maintain trails and/or streams and other tasks that make an environmental difference on any of the following days:  Registration is required.

  • Saturday, April 18, Earth Day:  Help plant trees for 24 hours straight.

F&M students volunteered at the local Salvation Army's weekly Sunday dinner! Participants helped to set up the room, prepared parts of the meal, and served the food. All participants were welcome to eat dinner at the event and transportation to and from the site was provided!

Volunteers helped out at the Lancaster Science Factory during their Cub Scout overnight event. Students helped set up for the event, served dinner, and assisted with fun activities on the exhibit floor. Transportation and dinner were provided for all participants.

Participants traveled to Camp Hebron in Halifax, PA to help with maintenance tasks such as trail cleanup, painting, and cleaning. Transportation, snacks, and dinner were provided!

Clean Up at Millport Conservancy

Time: 1:00 - 4:00 pm

Volunteers assisted with the upkeep of the conservancy and helped with tasks such as trail maintenance, cleaning up the onsite mill, and more. Transportation and snacks were provided for all participants.
