The Department embraces the statements issued by the American Association of Italian Studies and the American Association of Teachers of Italian regarding the condemnation of racial violence against Black, Indigenous, and people of color and continued commitment to anti-racist work in the classroom, scholarship, and profession at large.

We stand in solidarity with those that have experienced racial violence and discrimination in Italy, the United States, and around the globe and recognize our responsibility in working toward racial justice.

As a Department we strive to create an inclusive learning environment in our classrooms, to represent the diversity of Italian identities and uncover Italy’s colonial legacies both in our curriculum and scholarship, and to challenge the structural racial inequalities of our field.

We look forward to continuing this work as we return to campus in the fall of this momentous year 2020.
