Professor Theumer received her Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literature with an emphasis in Applied Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her scholarship focuses on nineteenth and twentieth century Latin American literature and culture, and her research interests include Cuban studies, gender studies, poetry and poetics. She has published on Cuban cultural identity and transgender subjectivity and artistic inspiration, and she is currently exploring the legacy of the Cuban poet, Julián del Casal.
