Lux et Lex et Lax

The Women's Lacrosse Team Captures Its Second National Championship

Franklin & Marshall may want to consider adding "et Lax" to the College's "Lux et Lex" motto. After the third consecutive appearance of the women's lacrosse team in the NCAA National Championship game and its second national championship in three years, the program has become synonymous with excellence.

This year's team had a flair for the dramatic. Trailing by one to Salisbury University with 62 seconds to play in the finals, Cat Serpe '12 streaked down the field to knot the game at 10-10.

Once the game went into overtime (which consists of two three-minute sessions), the juniors and seniors took over. Sarah Meisenberg '09 fed Blake Hargest '10 from behind the net for the eventual game winner 2:40 into the first session.

Meisenberg won the draw to start the second session, and the Diplomats ran out the clock on their way to a thrilling 11-10 victory.

This year's squad also had a streak of vengeance. In the semifinals, it swept past Hamilton College 16-13. This was sweet revenge for the veteran Diplomats who lost to Hamilton in last year's national final, thwarting the Dips' attempt to repeat as champs.

In defeating Salisbury in the final, the team avenged its only loss of the season.  The Sea Gulls had defeated the Diplomats 10-9 on March 29, snapping F&M's 35-game home winning streak.

Under the direction of  first-year head coach Lauren Paul '03, F&M ended the season with a 21-1 mark and dominated the postseason awards. Shannon Summers '09 was named the National Midfielder of the Year, while Jen Pritchard '09 was named the National Attacker of the Year.

Pritchard, the 2009 NCAA Tournament MVP, and Summers were two of the six Diplomats named All-American by U.S. Lacrosse/IWLCA. Meisenberg joined them on the first team. Hargest earned second-team honors, while Ashley Bevington '09 and Lidia Sanza '10 made the third team.
