First there were the rumors that the Mayans predicted the end of the world would take place in 2012 on Dec. 21. This prediction inspired the movie “2012,” released in 2009 and starring John Cusack.
Of course, 2012 is a presidential election year in the United States. So the ramp-up to the 2012 election started around, oh, December 2008. Londoners learned back in 2005 that their fair city would be hosting the 2012 Summer Olympics, which it recently did in spectacular fashion on the heels of celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of the ascension of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne.
Here in Lancaster, we are all aboard the 2012 bandwagon. That’s because Franklin & Marshall College is celebrating its 225th anniversary with numerous events tied to the theme of “Beyond 225: Inspired for Life.” That first class of a little more than a hundred men and women helped launch a college that today boasts more than 26,000 living alumni in all corners of the globe.
The College is celebrating another anniversary in 2012. The Alice Drum Women’s Center turns 20. The anniversary story in this issue includes interviews with the movers and shakers who were responsible for its founding.
With a nod to the College’s founder, Benjamin Franklin, and his generous gift of 200 pounds, this issue also features some words of wisdom from several alumni working in the philanthropy field about how each of us has something to contribute to the world around us.
As for Connie Renfrow ’12, she knew back in 2008 that 2012 would be a monumental year for her and her F&M classmates. She writes about her big day— and big year—in the first installment of our new section “A Day in the Life.”
I suspected coming into it that 2012 would be eventful. How has 2012 been significant for you? Are you already looking ahead to 2013? You don’t need to be marking a momentous occasion such as the founding of a college to share your news in “Class Notes.” We look forward to hearing about your own predictions, anniversaries and celebrations.
