Drone's-Eye View

This magazine article is part of Summer 2015 / Issue 82

Campus Space

Hovering above F&M’s Carolyn S. and Robert W. Wohlsen Center for the Sustainable Environment, a drone provides an aerial perspective of campus in the late-afternoon sun. Near the center of the image is the Wohlsen Center’s “green” roof—one of five on campus designed to reduce the energy required to cool and heat buildings.

The smokestack in the foreground is a familiar campus landmark with distinctive limestone details and a radial brick design. The 82-foot tall structure dates to 1924 and the construction of the Central Heating Plant, which was designed by Charles Zeller Klauder and built by Herman Wohlsen.
