1/10/2019 Office of Parent Relations

January 2019

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! Our best wishes for a happy and healthy 2019.

We are tremendously excited for the spring semester to begin next Tuesday, Jan. 15. Many students will arrive early for various activities and events and it will be great to see the campus filling up again soon after a quiet winter break. This beautiful, historic campus is at its best when it is filled with the bright enthusiasm and energy of our students, faculty and staff, especially during the cold winter weather.

Furthermore, the campus really sings when our students' families visit for events, competitions and activities. There are so many compelling reasons to visit F&M and Lancaster. We hope to see you during the upcoming semester!

All my best,

Maura Condon Umble ’83
Director of Parent Relations and Campaign Initiatives

Welcome, Spring Transfer Families!

We’d like to extend a warm welcome to our newest students and their families. Our incoming students, arriving on campus next week, will enrich our community. New parents may find it helpful to consult the Parents and Families section of F&M’s website as well as the Academic Calendar. Welcome to the F&Mily!

Information for Students Planning to Apply to PSSI

F&M’s Public Service Summer Institute (PSSI) is a great opportunity for rising juniors and seniors to gain valuable experience working at a local nonprofit or government entity.

Accepted students spend eight weeks under the guidance of carefully selected mentor-supervisors. Students work on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (32 hours per week) at a local nonprofit or government entity in an internship role that will either help their assigned organization expand capacity or evaluate current efforts. Every Wednesday, PSSI students come together as a cohort to embark on a hands-on exploration of a broader local community issue/opportunity while meeting a variety of local stakeholders and experts along the way. At the end of their experience, they spend their final Wednesday meeting sharing their insights and possible solutions with an invested group of community stakeholders.

If you think your student may be interested in this opportunity, encourage him or her to apply if he or she meet the following criteria:

  • Is a rising junior or senior this summer
  • Has a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher
  • Demonstrates a strong desire to immerse himself or herself in the everyday work of a local nonprofit or government entity to address social issues
  • Is available from June 12 to Aug. 9.

The student application period begins Feb. 13 and ends March 11 at 5 p.m.

For more information about PSSI, visit this page.

2019 Job and Internship Fair is Feb. 1

Students are welcome to join the Office of Student and Post-Graduate Development (OSPGD) for the seventh annual Job and Internship Fair Feb. 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Remind your student to come to the fair dressed in professional clothing and to bring multiple copies of his or her resume. If needed, students may borrow clothing from OSPGD's Career Closet. Resources regarding how to prepare for a job and internship fair, as well as numerous sample resumes, can be found in Handshake under "Resources," located on the "Career Center" tab. To view a list of participating employers, visit this page.

Archive of Parent Webinars

As you may remember, the Office of Student and Post-Graduate Development partnered with parent relations to offer a series of webinars to parents this past fall. If you were unable to attend or would just like to revisit these helpful conversations, all of the webinars are available to watch via the following links:

Thank You for a Wonderful 2018

Thanks so much to those of you who helped us finish 2018 on a high note by making a year-end gift to the Franklin & Marshall Fund. Giving to the fund ensures excellent opportunities every day for all of our students and helps us toward reaching our “Now to Next” campaign goals. Your annual support for the College, combined with that of thousands of other parents, friends and alumni, makes a huge difference in the lives of our students. It's never too late to make a difference at F&M. Please consider giving today.
