February 2019

Dear Parents,

This weather in Lancaster has been all over the map! On back-to-back days recently, I've seen students go from down parkas to shorts and T-shirts. It's hard for all of us to keep up with Mother Nature! One thing is for sure: springtime brings Lancaster a gorgeous mix of flowering trees and beautiful blooms. I hope you are able to get to campus during the upcoming spring months to catch a glimpse of our lovely surroundings.

A perfect time to visit campus would be for our third annual Creativity & Innovation Symposium Saturday, March 30. This daylong conference invites students, faculty, alumni, parents and friends to come together to discuss how F&M is building a sustainable culture of innovation throughout the curriculum and beyond. Look for additional information via email and contact me with any questions. Hope to see you there!

All my best,

Maura Condon Umble ’83

Sophomores Preparing to Declare a Major

Parents of sophomores may have had some discussions with their students over the winter break about important major declaration decisions they will soon make. Whether your student is considering a single major, a double or joint major, a major and minor, or a special studies major, that choice will have a significant impact on his or her remaining experience on campus.

At a liberal arts college like F&M, we encourage students to choose a major in a discipline about which they are passionate. We recommend that students seek counsel with their academic advisers or that they connect with professors teaching in their areas of interest. After choosing their majors, students may be assigned one of these professors as their major adviser.

Parents sometimes wonder how various majors translate into productive and successful careers after graduation. The staff at the Office of Student and Post-Graduate Development (OSPGD) stands ready to assist students as they build professional acumen through their academic and experiential activities and prepare to meet their post-college goals. Please explore the OSPGD website to learn about the many programs and services offered to our students.

Spring Break Shuttles and Transportation

F&M provides shuttles to and from regional airports (Baltimore/Washington, Philadelphia and Harrisburg) as well as to the Lancaster train station at the beginning and end of spring break (which begins after classes Friday, March 8, and ends when classes resume Monday, March 18). Students may use this website to view the schedules and find instructions for how to make a reservation. The deadline for reservations is usually early in March.

Commencement 2019

I know parents of seniors are looking forward to Commencement Weekend at F&M, a celebratory time for all. I also know that many of you are eager to learn more about the events of May 11. Be on the lookout for an email from the Dean’s Office in the coming week, which will provide important details for the weekend.

Our Commencement website will be regularly updated in the coming months. The website is a great source of information, including a very helpful Q&A section.

If you have not yet made hotel reservations, this page offers some options. Additionally, the Discover Lancaster site provides plenty of information.

Send Your Student a Valentine’s Treat

Are you looking for the perfect gift to send your student for Valentine's Day? Visit our Dining Services website and send him or her a sweet treat that comes with a fluffy companion. Order a Chocolate Strawberry Delight, six delicious chocolate covered strawberries that comes with a stuffed animal. Your student will be notified that he or she has a special treat to pick up in the dining hall. Please order at least 48 hours in advance.

Show Your Love for F&M

February is the perfect time to show your love for F&M through philanthropy. Your gift to the Franklin & Marshall Fund will guarantee that F&M students of today and tomorrow have the opportunity to undertake a world-class liberal arts education. All gifts also go toward the College’s “Now to Next” campaign. As always, you may choose to honor your student with your gift -- a meaningful Valentine's Day present! Thank you for helping F&M remain one of the nation's top liberal arts colleges for generations to come.
