Reliving Commencement 2019

We celebrated a wonderful Commencement Weekend last month at F&M. Five hundred forty graduates received their diplomas, as family and friends celebrated with them, under beautiful blue skies.

There were many highlights of the weekend… check out this video to experience the excitement! We hope you will visit the links below to enjoy a further glimpse into this momentous occasion:

Summer Student Research

This summer, more than 90 students have remained on campus to pursue research projects. F&M provides funding support for these students to pursue research with an F&M faculty mentor full-time, for 10 weeks. The most common source of these funds is the Lucille and William Hackman endowment, so many of the scholarships are referred to as “Hackman Scholarships.” This summer, there are 78 Hackman scholars.

We are incredibly proud to offer students the opportunity to engage in collaborative research with faculty every year. These hands-on experiences may result in a shared byline on a published article or the opportunity to attend a world-class conference. These opportunities are priceless.

To pursue collaborative research projects, F&M students explore their interest with professors during the fall semester and, after rigorous application and proposal processes, begin their projects after final exams in May. Franklin & Marshall is thrilled to offer many talented students Hackman Scholarships, which provide stipends that allow for on-campus living and working during the summer. Often, students extend their research into the next academic year and continue their work with faculty in independent research courses.

Last year, summer scholars had a liberal arts experience among Mayan ruins in Belize, measured smartphone app updates, built a robot with lasers, flight-of-time cameras and coding, and much more. F&M’s dedicated faculty, who are committed to student development and achievement, mentor students in exploring their communities and their world and extending their classroom knowledge through these summer research opportunities. During TRUE BLUE Weekend in October, visit the Fall Research Fair to learn what students and faculty discovered this summer.
