Alumni Share Advice with Future Diplomats
Meaning "both/and," the ampersand in the middle of our College’s name is more than just punctuation—it’s the defining symbol of our distinctive liberal arts experience. This philosophy comes to life on our tree-lined, 220-acre campus, where the limitless potential of current Diplomats meets the rich legacy of those who have walked these paths before.
We asked our alumni to share advice with students taking their first steps on campus during our Fall Open Houses. Their reflections offer a valuable insight into the transformative experience future Diplomats can expect at F&M.

“Be yourself and embrace this new journey. College isn’t just about academics; it’s about discovering who you are, what you love, and how to advocate for yourself. The transition may feel overwhelming at times, but you’re not alone. Hundreds of students around you are going through the same journey. Embrace the awkwardness and the growth that comes with it. You’re going to be great when you get here, because you’re already great right now.”
— Michael Vasquez '25

“Don't be scared if you're unsure of your path; it will reveal itself. Until then: Stay open, stay curious, and never stop exploring. You'll be okay.”
— Jeff Nytch ’87

“Embrace new experiences, stay organized, seek support, get involved, and prioritize self-care. College is a time for growth and exploration. Try new activities, meet people from diverse backgrounds, and don't hesitate to reach out for support when you need it. F&M has a wealth of resources available to help you succeed.”
— Genesis Familia '24

“Regardless of what profession you are considering, take courses that most interest you with professors known for their excellence. You will likely never have another opportunity to take philosophy, Civil War history, Andy Warhol and Pop Art, writing poetry. This is your time.”
— Marc Straus, MD, FACP ’65

“Try anything and everything that sounds interesting to you. Classes, clubs, foods, events, whatever - you never know what will pique your interest and lead you to your future. And *definitely* study abroad! Don’t miss that chance to go away and explore.”
— Annie Lyon ’01

“Be open to and have awareness for how much personal growth you will experience over these next four years. It'll be deeper and more fulfilling than you think it will be.”
— Eileen Ellis ’95

“Take as many opportunities as you can to learn about people who are different from you and who see the world through a different perspective. Listen to their stories, be curious, and show respect. You will grow to know more about yourself, and you will become a kinder, more compassionate person able to see the needs, preferences, and dreams of others. It will change your life!”
— TJ Rieger ’06

“Don't be afraid to challenge yourself and your abilities. And don't forget to make the most out of everything and have the most fun you could while doing what you love!”
— Youssef El Gharably ’25

“Get out and explore all of the amazing restaurants, shops, and historical experiences that Lancaster (and the surrounding county) have to offer!”
— Alex Raup ’09

“Embrace every opportunity that comes your way, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Some of the most rewarding experiences come from taking risks and trying something new.”
