Diplomats Share True Blue Wisdom

This weekend, Diplomat spirit and nostalgia will ripple across campus in varied shades of blue. True Blue Weekend will welcome alumni, students, and parents to campus Sept. 19-21 for F&M’s annual homecoming and family weekend.

Our biggest campus celebration of the year is the perfect opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the transformative power of a Franklin & Marshall education. We asked our alumni what advice they would share with their first-year selves, and their timeless words of wisdom will resonate with every generation of Diplomats.

Robert S. Dorkin ’74
“You will make some of the best friends of your life at F&M. More than 50 years after graduating, these friends have been with me for the highs and lows of my life. Treasure these friendships.”

— Robert S. Dorkin ’74

Shayra Nunez ‘25, the 2025 recipient of the Williamson Medal

“Say yes—to the unexpected, the unfamiliar, and the things that scare you. College goes by faster than you think, and it is one of the best opportunities you’ll have to challenge yourself. Lean into the moments and experiences that push you outside of your comfort zone. Growth doesn’t happen when we are comfortable. So stay curious, take risks, and give yourself the space to be surprised. When you leave F&M, leave knowing you truly showed up and did everything you wanted to accomplish.”

— Shayra Nunez ’25, the 2025 recipient of the Williamson Medal

Michael (Mickey) Joseph ’68, ’P08

“Know that you are attending an extraordinary college that has so much to offer you. Be fully involved in academics, college activities, sports and social activities. Take advantage of opportunities to connect with alumni since this will provide career advice and connections for future employment-a mentoring program is one possibility. Start strong, achieve and enjoy.”

— Michael (Mickey) Joseph ’68, ’P08

Fatimata Ly '25
“Take full advantage of your liberal arts education, explore disciplines you’re unfamiliar with and step outside your comfort zone. Get involved in the many clubs on campus; it’s a great way to meet people and build your network. Don’t overlook Lancaster! It’s a small city, but it has a lot to offer in terms of culture, food and events. Lastly, build meaningful relationships with F&M’s faculty. They are incredibly supportive and will be there to guide you throughout your journey.”

— Fatimata Ly '25

Vyas Agarwal ’23
“Get out of your comfort zone and do things you always wanted to do! Being at F&M is your time in the spotlight, where you can do what you want at your own pace, and engage in a community of the smartest people I have ever known.”

— Vyas Agarwal ’23

Omar Nichols '24
“Don't hesitate to reach out and leverage F&M’s alumni network. Alumni can offer valuable insights, advice and opportunities to help you navigate your college experience and prepare for your future career. Take advantage of this supportive community and connect with alumni who share your interests and aspirations. They can be valuable mentors and resources as you embark on your journey at F&M.”

— Omar Nichols '24

Liz Hackett Krantz ’13
“Explore academic interests and curiosities, and don’t tell yourself you can’t or shouldn’t try courses in areas you’ve never previously considered. There is space for you in unexpected places, you just have to show up. Go abroad. Get off campus and spend time in Lancaster— it’s your new home!”

— Liz Hackett Krantz ’13

Josary Valeiron '22

“Take advantage of everything F&M has to offer! It’s the ideal place to break out of your shell before you look back and wish you had. I would advise anyone who is considering attending F&M, to take their experience one step at a time and value every moment.”

— Josary Valeiron  ’22

Michael Manley ’14
“Embrace the messy-middle! F&M fosters an environment where you can try new things, step outside of your comfort zone and learn from failure and missteps. The goal isn't perfection; it's growth and self-discovery.”

— Michael Manley ’14

Allie Crocker ‘25

“Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! F&M is a great place to find out who you are and what you enjoy!”

— Allie Crocker ’25

Tony Doris '78

“Take full advantage of your decision to attend a liberal arts college. If you're a mathematics or science person, take courses in literature, too. If you're more literary or artistic, take science courses. Broaden yourself. That will serve you always, in every circumstance.”

— Tony Doris ’78

Beth Boyer ‘08
“Invest in friendships!! I still talk to my F&M friends (and my F&M husband!) literally every day.”
