General Recycling on Campus

New recycling guidelines for Lancaster County focus on the “Big Four” of recycling.  The following items can be placed in any of our recycling containers on campus:

 

1. Aluminum and steel cans and their metal lids

2. Glass food or drink jars and bottles (brown, green, or clear)

3. #1 and #2 plastic bottles and jugs, with necks. Caps should be removed and discarded.

4. Brown corrugated cardboard.

 

Jars, bottles, and cans should be rinsed out, or at least thoroughly emptied.

Items that Cannot be Recycled 

These items were formerly recyclable under old regulations, but are unfortunately cannot currently be collected by our hauler:

  • Office Paper
  • Newspaper
  • Paperboard (Cereal Boxes, Tissue Boxes, etc.)
  • Plastic Containers Without Necks (such as Yogurt Containers)
  • Food-Soiled Materials
  • Broken Glass
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Plastic Tableware (Knives, Forks, etc.)
  • Waxy Cardboard
  • Plastic Food Wrappers
  • Used Paper Towels or Tissues
  • Shredded Paper*

Recycling Other Items

Franklin and Marshall continues to work to on diverting as many items as possible from the waste stream and ensure that they are appropriately recycled.  The college has collection systems in place for the following:

  • Plastic Bags
  • Ink Cartridges
  • Batteries
  • Light Bulbs
  • E-Waste
