BiographyDevin Howell received his Master's degree from Carnegie Mellon University where he studied with Jeffrey Turner, principal bassist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. His undergraduate studies were completed at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he graduated with honors in performance. While attending NEC he studied intensively with Don Palma of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. While in Boston, Mr. Howell performed on both modern and period instruments with ensembles such as the Boston Philharmonic, Gardner Museum Chamber Orchestra, and the Harvard Baroque Orchestra. In 2000 he performed in an all-faculty performance of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos with cellist Lawrence Lesser, harpsichordist John Gibbons, and the Borromeo String Quartet. In that same year he also performed with harpsichordist Kenneth Cooper and the Tokyo String Quartet in the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival's "Bach Y2K" concert series. He also has taken part in the Sunflower Music Festival in Topeka, Kansas. Since 2001 he has been performing with the Lake Placid Sinfonietta, a chamber orchestra in upstate New York. Mr. Howell performs with the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra and various regional ensembles in the Pittsburgh area. He is substitute bassist for the Pittsburgh Symphony. In the central Pennsylvania region he regularly performs with the Harrisburg Symphony, York Symphony, and Harrisburg Choral Society and Messiah College Choral Society. He has appeared as both a section player and an acting principal of the Lancaster Symphony. In addition to teaching at Franklin & Marshall Mr. Howell teaches at Dickinson College
where he also performs with the Dickinson Orchestra and the Dickinson Collegium. |
