Housing Information for Next Year

Each spring, the campus is buzzing with excitement and anticipation as the Department of Housing and Residential Life launches the housing application process for returning students!

Last week, students were emailed essential information about the process and a calendar of important dates and deadlines for the process. Students also received the Housing Selection Guide, a resource with detailed information regarding the process, timeline information, housing costs, FAQ’s, and resources to assist them through the process.

We know there are often questions about the selection process, especially for rising sophomores selecting housing for the first time. Explore this brief overview so that you can understand the general process, timelines and terms that are used as your students go through housing selection.

Help For Students

In addition to the Housing Selection Guide, this year the Department of Housing and Residential Life will also be offering:

  • Open office hours
  • Tabling in Steinman College Center
  • At least five “Roommate Finder” events hosted by our house directors and house advisers

These events are all to provide support to students navigating the process. We encourage students to utilize these opportunities to have their questions answered promptly, and assist them with making roommate plans for next year. Staff will also be available each night of housing selection to assist students during the selection period with any concerns or questions. Students may also visit the housing office, located in Harwood Commons, garden level, for assistance. Or they can visit the housing website for more information about the housing choices available for returning students.

If students have any additional questions after reading through their email and the resource guide, they are welcome to reach out to the Housing and Residential Life team at  housing@fandm.edu.

Housing Application Basics

All students must fill out a housing application. To do this, students will go to their housing portal via the F&M Experience portal. The deadline for the housing application is Friday, March 13, at 11:59 pm.

Preselection

This year, there will also be a smaller, optional process called “preselection.” This will include students with housing accommodations as well as those looking to live in Arts House, Christian Athletes House, Dietz Quiet Living, Harbaugh House, SISTERS & IMPACT House, Sustainability House, or Greek-affiliated housing for the first time. The application for preselection will be live at the same time as the housing application. Students have until tomorrow, Friday, March 6, at 11:59 pm to fill out the preselection application.

Selection

Students who do not participate in preselection will go through the housing selection process. For housing selection, students are required to fill out the housing application on their housing portal. After completing the housing application, they can begin to add roommates to their roommate group on the housing portal.

Housing selection times will be released in late March. These are based on class status, with rising seniors going first, then rising juniors, then rising sophomores. Selection times are fully randomized within class years. Once assigned a selection time, students have time to consider housing options and make any changes to group size or roommates. Their choices should reflect the requirements for available housing at their designated time of selection.
