The Legacy Project at F&M investigates the historical relationship between Franklin
& Marshall College and the institution of slavery in the United States. During the
‘21 - ‘22 academic school year, a group of faculty, staff, and students researched
and compiled a 50-page Legacy of Slavery report exploring and focusing on the lives
of the first Board of Trustees and our namesakes, Benjamin Franklin and John Marshall.
Members of the Study Group will be available to answer your questions from Noon until
4 p.m. Please stop in to visit the panel exhibit and a link to the full report.

You Are Not Alone is the first major attempt to document the LGBTQ+ history of F&M
since its founding in 1787. The documentary was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic
by PJ Howard (they/she) as part of their final Film & Media independent study project.
It consists of interviews with 20+ alumni, students, faculty, and professional staff
whose time on campus ranges from 1962 to the present day. Sponsored by Art, Art History
and Film Department, and the Archives and Special Collections Department.

of Distinguished Alumni Awards.
The Alumni Medal, awarded in recognition of sustained, distinguished and outstanding
service to the College will be presented to Douglas Evans, Esq., ’72 and Mary Schapiro,
Esq., ’77, P’16, P’18 (these awards will be presented at a later program). The Alumni
Citation is awarded to those who have distinguished themselves in a particular profession,
has provided dedicated leadership and service to the community, and has an exemplary
record of accomplishments in a particular field of endeavor. This year’s award will
be presented to Alex Sapir ’88, Dawn James ’97, Aaron Bass ’01 and Sam Reiman ’02.
The Alumni Development Volunteer Award recognized alumni who have excelled in raising
funds and obtaining pledges for the College, and will be presented to Greg Plotner
’03. The Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) award is given young alumni who have
contributed significant service and support to the College. This year’s awardees are
Tommy Bergstrom ’13 and Kaitlin Oliver ’16.

An award-winning creative writing major, chemistry minor, international student, longtime
member of the Writers House community, and extraordinary human, Lucy Kirkman ’17 died
from injuries suffered in a car accident in her native country of Zimbabwe on August
8, 2023. She had stayed in touch with her F&Mily after she graduated, and faculty,
staff, Lancaster friends, and alumni continue to feel her loss keenly. We welcome
everyone who knew Lucy to join us for this event in celebration of her life and work.
