The Nolt Music Award is a grant of up to $3000 enabling Franklin & Marshall student musicians to undertake musically enriching projects. Possible projects include taking lessons with a member of a major orchestra or opera company resulting in a recital, attending a summer music festival in the U.S. or abroad, funding the premiere of a student composition, undertaking a research or field-work trip, going to a major metropolitan area to attend/critique a series of concerts or operas, or funding a tour by the Nolt Scholar's chamber ensemble. Awards of more than $3000 may be possible upon special request. Any enrolled Franklin & Marshall student may apply; however, projects must be completed prior to the student's graduation.

Criteria for receiving Nolt Music Awards include:

  • musical interest and merit of the project,

  • quality and thoroughness of the application,

  • potential artistic benefit to the applicant and the community,

  • academic standing of the applicant, and

  • the music faculty's assessment of the integrity and musical potential of the applicant.

Students must secure a music faculty advisor as they develop a proposal, and will continue to work with this advisor as they complete the project. Students who receive Nolt Music Awards will make a presentation representing the outcome of their project. Typical formats for these presentations include a brief lecture/demonstration (about 15 to 20 minutes), a display in the lobby of Barshinger Concert Hall, or a performance. This award is made possible by a generous gift from Joseph '59 and Marianne Nolt. When possible, Nolt Scholars may have the opportunity to greet Mr. and Mrs. Nolt at this or other appropriate events.

To apply

Submit a proposal 250 to 750 words in length describing the project. Include a detailed budget, a time line, a description of the format for presentation, and the name and signature of your faculty advisor.  February 15 at 4 p.m. is the deadline to submit applications via the link below.
