Men's Basketball Team Forges Friendships in Costa Rica

The Franklin & Marshall men’s basketball team isn’t just striving for victory on the court. Teammates also are making memories, forming connections, and building skills that will last a lifetime.

The team traveled to Costa Rica in early August, providing an opportunity for players to bond while broadening their horizons and stepping out of their comfort zones by exploring a new country.

“This trip definitely improved my overall experience at F&M, as it was a great opportunity to strengthen my connections with my teammates, experience a new place and improve our skills — both as a team and individually,” said Asad Syed ’27.

After three days of team workouts and culture-building discussions on campus, the team set off for a week that included engaging in community service and testing out their strategy in a few competitive games.

“It was great to have extra time on the court with our players,” said Nick Nichay, head coach. “We played well and came out with two victories, while also experimenting with some new lineups and concepts. The opportunity to take a trip like this is a truly special experience.”

The team also took in the sights, touring the city of San Jose, visiting La Paz Waterfalls Gardens, Arenal Volcano, and Baldi Hot Springs, and concluding their trip with time on the beach in Punta Leona.

“What makes basketball so cool is that it can take us to different countries and allow us to meet our best friends and create lifelong memories that are unforgettable,” said Logan Satlow ’26.

In addition to experiencing a new culture and giving back to the community, this memorable trip provided an opportunity for the team to get to know each other and build trust, qualities that are essential to improving their performance on the court.

“This trip deepened the camaraderie between my teammates and coaches, leaving us fully prepared to have each other’s backs in the upcoming season,” said Carter Lawrence ’27.

“When you share experiences and moments like we all did in Costa Rica, it really strengthens our bonds as a team,” Nichay said. “I know they created memories that will last a lifetime. It will no doubt make our team stronger and more connected.”
