Celebrating our 20th Emerging Writers Festival

April 13-15, 2022

Each spring, the English Department at Franklin & Marshall College hosts its annual Emerging Writers Festival, dedicated to championing the work of writers early in their careers. Since its inception in 2002, the Festival has been a collaborative effort between students and faculty, bringing people together across the campus community and beyond for readings, workshops, and the opportunity to mix, formally and informally, with some of the country’s most exciting new literary talents. Generously supported by Edna Hausman P'85 and Richard D. Hausman '50, P'85 and the Philadelphia Alumni Writers House, the Emerging Writers Festival is a marquee event in F&M’s literary year.

I’m very excited to be part of the F&M Emerging Writer Festival committee! This is a great opportunity for me to get in touch with these fabulous emerging writers, get to know their writings and peek at the diverse literature world. Emerging Writer Festival builds up a stage for writers to share their writings with the whole F&M community. As a student who does not have that much experience in creative writing, EWF connects me to the products of creativity. I am grateful to work with all our members in the committee - it’s a pleasant experience to work with these inspiring peers.

I’d dreamt of serving on the EWF planning committee ever since I was accepted to F&M. The day I arrived for a campus visit coincided with the bye-bye barbecue, and I was immediately charmed, buzzed by the literary (and culinary) hubbub at Writers House. It thrilled me to think that I might one day indulge my passion for all things writing and writers, conspiring with fellow scribes to foster community, language, and meaning.

I wanted to join the committee because the festival is one of my absolute favorite events hosted by F&M each year, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to meet and work with such talented writers!

As a part of Franklin & Marshall's wonderful English department, I've learned so much about the importance of community to one's professional and personal growth. The Emerging Writers Festival, one of our biggest annual events, has served as a moment for the community to gather and celebrate artists beginning to articulate their vision. When I was invited, I was not going to miss out on the opportunity to experience and partake in preparing for this wonderful event. I am so excited to meet new writers, learn from them, and celebrate their accomplishments with the entire F&M community.

I wanted to be on this committee not only to learn under such talented and dedicated writers, but also to help celebrate this wonderful department. Without my peers and professors, I never would have found the spark nor the courage to write. I hope to inspire others to do the same with EWF.

I am so honored to be a part of the Emerging Writers’ Festival committee this year. As an English Creative Writing major, I’ve attended previous festivals and loved the community it fostered. Gathering with others who are just as passionate for writing is such a special opportunity. I’m so excited to connect with my fellow seniors, English professors, and all of the amazing emerging writers we get to work alongside.

I am so excited to be a member of the 2022 Emerging Writers Festival student committee! I have many fond memories of past EWF events, and it's especially exciting that we get to help plan the first EWF back on campus since the start of the pandemic. One of my favorite things about F&M is how lively and energetic our creative writing community is, and EWF is a truly wonderful example of that community.
